Chapter 13:

Was he dead? He didnt feel dead. He didnt feel anything.

Edmund looked down at Cassie and Jeffrey, both kneeling over someone. He could hear them faintly. What were they saying? Who? So much blood! There was blood all over Cassies hands, cradling a mans head in her lap. And she was crying crying desperately. Shhhhh. He could hear her if he tried really hard.

Edmund! Edmund! Dont you die on me now Edmund! Edmund, please! Dont you leave me! Edmund! Please fight, Edmund! Jeffrey, Cassie pleaded desperately, you have to help him. Help him! Wheres the ambulance? Somebody help him! Cassie wailed, blood now streaking her face where she had wiped at her tears.

Im sorry Cassie, Edmund thought, so sorry. Edmund saw Cassies pain and knew he was the cause again. I always seem to be apologizing. Perhaps its for the best Perhaps it really is for the best now, father, Edmund considered, as he realized that the man who lay bleeding before him was himself, and he felt himself drifting away from Cassie below. Until... Edmund slowly became aware of a growing brightness beside him.

No, Edmund.

Richard? Edmund whispered, in awe. The airy, ethereal figure now formed beside him certainly resembled his brother.

Its not your time, Edmund. Richard spoke softly, confidently... so familiar! It was good to hear his voice again. She needs you.

Cassie?

Cassie, Richard confirmed. You can stop this stop her pain.

Youre the one she needs, Richard. I cant

Go to her, Edmund. Richard commanded gently.

Edmund felt the persuasion of Richards words, but Richard Edmund began, uncertain.

Go, little brother. Ill be here

The light that was Richards presence faded and instantly Edmund felt everything all at oncepain, love, hope, fear God, he could barely breathe! Something was wrong. Something was very wrong. The pain in his head he struggled to open his eyes, just a little. There! There she was. Fuzzy, but beautiful. Cassie. Her blue eyes were looking down into his, wet with tears. No more tears, Edmund thought. All he wanted for Cassie was happiness. All he wanted yes, Cassie!

Im here, he croaked, his throat tight and dry, his lungs struggling for air.

Edmund! Oh god, yes! Yes! Stay with me Edmund! Cassie bent her head nearer to Edmundsholding him closer, willing him to stay with her.

I I love you, Edmund managed to whisper, before the pain in his head overwhelmed him again and he had to close his eyes had to Wait! There was something he wanted to tell her. Something important something he couldnt remember couldnt later. Later. Must rest.

Help is coming, Cassie. ONeills voice echoed through his murky consciousness. The EMT guys are almost here.

Hold on, Edmund, just hold on, Cassie sobbed.

Yes. He had to stay. He knew. He didnt know how, but he knew. Stay with Cassie, he thought, as the distant sound of sirens heralded the black oblivion of unconsciousness once more.
